Add a PTR record in network solutions DNS manager?

I don't follow you - that's a reverse DNS record, do you mean Network Solutions as in the registrar, because you wouldn't enter a PTR record at the registrar you'd do it at the DNS servers that have your IP ranges DNS delegated to them.

Ok, lets assume I have asked the question wrongly.

My mate said to me. Trying to add a PTR Record using Network Solution's DNS Manager. I assume he has everything setup.

Network Solutions are just a domain name registrar so if you register domain.com they will let you add forward DNS entries such as www.domain.com and ftp.domain.com etc.

A PTR record is a reverse DNS entry that maps an IP, say 1.2.3.4 to a forward DNS entry such as www.domain.com

Because an IP address is typically assigned to a user by their ISP, typically the ISP will look after the reverse DNS entries, so the short answer is that your friend needs to speak to their ISP, assuming they fall into the 99% of people where that's how it'll be setup, and if they're in the other 1% they wouldn't be asking the question.

He's explained why ptrs are required, (rdns for e-mail etc), and he's trying to get it so he's only get legitimate spam.

He's a little rusty is all. 4 years out of the industry. He's got a temporary 'thing' with godaddy until his ISP sorts things out. Thx again!

No problem. It might be worth checking with him if he's on a residential or business ADSL account - there's a lot of ISPs and companies that simply won't accept mail that originates from an IP address that's listed as residential, regardless of if all the DNS/rDNS is correctly configured. Just a thought be a shame for him to jump through hoops and find it's not practical.

Prolly business. I've been ribbing him about the 99% / 1% thing. Telling him he's in the 99%, but getting paid to be in the 1%.
