startup entry

[link to this post]

On my win xp startup entries (after run, msconfig), I have the following:
uiucu command (Docum~\sam\L... Location: software\microsoft\windows\current version\run

The above item (driver or whatever) relates to faulty modem which I removed. In the cofiguaration utility, I have unticked it and so windows works ok. However I wish to remove it from the startup. Can anybody help? If it means amending the Registry, then I shall need very detailed help!!!, as I never touched it before. Many thanks in advance.

(just to clarify) Do you want to remove the entry from Msconfig 'startup' tab?

Funny old world.

www.camieabz.co.uk/util/cclean.htm

That will do a lot of things as well as delete startup entries.

Yes, I want a normal startup and not selective! The line/entry relates to a modem which has been removed. I tried to instal a driver for it before I realized that it was faulty. Meanwhile the install program created this line/entry in the startup!

You can go to sysinternals.com and download autoruns free.

This will show you everything (the most common stuff is in the logon tab) that runs at startup, whether registry based or not.

You can disable a startup by unticking it or you can delete it totally.

Woops - I replied to your latest "anonymous" entry. I suspect you'd forgotten to log in.

Hijackthis is what everyone seems to be using for this sort of thing. As I understand it, you'll have to re-enable everything that's disabled under msconfig first.

I use Startup Control Panel, it puts a handy wee startup icon in your control panel.

It's not as detailed as autoruns but, it does the job.

Which is fine if you know what you are doing but not a method I would recommend to just anyone as it is far too easy to kill your system with the wrong edits/deletes.

One of the simplest tools and one which many have installed anyway as an Anti Spyware/Adware tool is Spybot Search and Destroy's System Startup in the Tools section. This allows the user to either simply toggle a Startup item on or off, similar to MSConfig and it will remain in the toggled state until changed, but also allows deleting it completely. I.e. it does the regedit bit for you but safely.
