Urgent Help Needed

[link to this post]

Hi All

I had a problem with my pc and had to reinstall windows. I installed it on a different drive and tried moving the various account documents and settings from the old setup to the new drive. All went well with the exception of one account folder which said access is denied. That account was password protected when logging on and when account was created I think the privacy option(or something to the effect was select) ie where others cannot access your files was selected.

Unfortunately the old windows setup which had the problems has been deleted. Is there a way of getting access to th said account folder?

Thank you.

Recreate the user that owned the folder in question?

Failing that, you could always attempt to 'take ownership' of the folder in question. To do this, log in as a user with admin rights: Right-click the folder and select properties. Select the 'Security' tab. Click the 'Advanced' button. Click the 'Owner' tab. Change the owner to your current login and make sure 'Replace owner on subcontainers and objects' is ticked.

Yup you need to take ownership of the folder to get round the security permissions, I presume it was the old windows installs My documents folder for a given user and when that user was created you chose Make private (most people do)

If you take ownership that will replace the securty permissions on that folder and you will be able to access it

Hi Spasch

Have tried what you suggested but there is no security tab to select and have tried selecting all the other options after properties buyt nothing. Tabs I have are General, Sharing, Customize.

Any ideas what is happening?

Thanks.

Open my computer
Click Tools > Folder Options
Click the view tab
Scroll to the bottom of the list
Untick "Use simple file sharing"

Now the security tab will be there and you can take ownership, dont forget to turn it back on if you want an easier time sharing folders at home, if not then leave it off
