A re-install of Win98SE

[link to this post]

Besides my WInXP pc, I also have a Win98SE pc for some "old stuff".

Question is, if I Format and start again I will not be able to download the various upgrades/fixes/security stuff from Microsoft as they no longer support 98SE.

Does anyone know of a archieve of these downloads?

Thanks.

ps I am considering making it dual boot, but to do the job properly would still have the above problem>)

There's a lot of links turned up when googling 'win98 updates'.

What I don't know is whether the (unofficial) SP packs contain all the necessary/useful updates. You might be able to chase them by looking on the existing system to see what is loaded (one of the MSoft tools will do this)

As I understood it, you can still use windows update and download the updates.. Just they aren't releasing them anymore?

I could be wrong, of course. ..

Edit -- just remembered there is an unofficial servicepack for win 98SE - http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html

Thanks to NICK_ADSL_UK for posting about that ages ago

You can still update win98 like normal via windows update, they just aren't releasing any new updates following the support cut off period whenever that was!

All 98SE updates are available still via Windows Update. But you cannot get the individual updates directly from MS, only via WU.

Sorry, my post is probably of no help to the OP.... (as the horse has already found the unbolted stable door)

.... but, for the benefit of others (whose horse is still in the stable), this is a good opportunity to give a reminder of the benefits of making regular drive image backups.
