UK TV abroad

[link to this post]

any idea how my parents could watch uk tv whilst in spain (no sat signal) iplayer and 4od both check the ip, they have a pc in uk with a connection, and a lappy in spain with them, there must be some way of streaming carp uk tv to them without me having to u/load it (eastenders, cash in the attic etc.)
not exactly a windows issue, but xp machines.
tvcatchup looked good for them, but also checks ip

Google for Slingbox or LocationFree...they will both do this.

Where in Spain? There are loads of people there getting UK satellite TV.

My researches so far suggest that, to get the full range of FTA UK TV you need Astra2D.
Unfortunately the footprint on this only reaches the northern fringes of Spain, and needs a larger dish even there.

You need a bigger dish in Cornwall and Northern Scotland too - so that's not a surprise.

Can they ask around their local community to see what other people have? It seems that almost everyone in certain parts of Spain is a Brit ex-pat anyway!

general consensus seems to be very, very big dish (south of Barcelona) or do without, they're too tight to spend money on a slingbox , i'm not going to record and burn/send over the stuff, so they can do without (been there 4 months already, not done 'em any harm)

Well yes, in southern Spain it is normal to have a 1.2m dish or even larger but this is easily available and local installers will do this. I and many friends receive Sky in Malaga region with no problems.

Some great info here regarding Sky reception...

we have a caravan too and we have a satellite dome on the roof which gives us Brit TV wherever we go in France .

we mainly use Hotbird and Astra but can st the gadget for other Satellites if required. Yes it was expensive - but it is excellent and very fast to set up once we arrive on a campsite

Hi Tony

if they have a fast internet connection they CAN get a proper UK IP address and secure tunnelled access to the UK .. no faffing around hunting google for UK IP addresses that don't work / slow..

It might help - but here's no substitute for watching TV in HD on a big screen )
