IT Bible template.

Hello Buds....

not sure if anyone can help but dont ask dont get.

as is always the case after years and years of failing to record any information my current firm has asked me to prduce an IT bible (Technical).
I know the sort of information i want to record but im lacking any ideas of a neat and tidy format.

Does anyone know of or have a template for such a thing ?
or maybe an IT Bible they have produced them selves which i can steal up a copy (with sensitive data removed obviously).

Wouldn't a wiki format be a good idea nowadays?

The lansweeper link is the first result using the suggested search phrase as seen at the second link. But there are plenty of others there as well as hints from the results of other phrases that may prove useful if necessary. Obviously the word freeware is optional if you don't mind paying.

it not so much a network topology im after but more of template to produce a printed document that anyone with a suitable level can easily navigate the company it systems.

for example a brief overview followed by several sections for server (what where IP how which services) etc.

The idea being that if you turned up on site and had to resolve an email issue you could reference said bible and see that Email runs on the Dell 3600 which is in the 2nd cab and labeled "Email", it has the IP address of x.x.x.x, the OS user/pass is XXXX and the email admin is XXX.XXX.
so on and so forth.

im sure many people msut do something simular to this ?

Lansweeper, as well as many other similar programs, produce results/reports that can be customised in as many ways as you need. They not only give you the network topology of your LAN/WAN but also the hardware and software installed on each machine (The LAN in the name of Lansweeper simply reflects that it will scan machines across networks rather than needing it installed on each machine.) with the ability to add your own notes for each machine, such as highlighting any particular items you need. Though you can probably do what you need directly from Lansweeper during a scan, if not directly with a Lansweeper inbuilt feature, then by incorporating your own customised scripts to use during the scans (there are some ready made scripts available on their site). Lansweeper ties scan results in with SQL so the reports/charts produced are entirely up to you and can be customised depending on the information you need displayed for any particular user or tech. Note, if you don't have SQL installed it will offer to download and install MSSQL2005 Server during setup.

Note, I have concentrated above on Lansweeper because I have used it in the past, but many of the System Inventory/Auditing packages have similar features. Of course, possibly the biggest downside with any package with a wealth of features is the learning curve and some of these packages may be overkill for your needs.
