code 41 error with USB Host in device manager

[link to this post]

Hiya,

I have a major problem with a PC that was heavily infected with malware and the like. It is all clean now but no USB device will work, in device manager it says windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device (code 41) for the Standard and enhance USB host. I have tried uninstalling them in normal Windows and in Safe mode, uninstalling and reinstalling the latest nforce drivers but the exclamation mark always reappears.

Any ideas apart from a repair of windows or formatting and reinstalling (please no)????

There is power coming throught the USB ports as the light on memory stick lights up, but windows just does not recognise it at all.

Its Windows XP SP3, Asus M2n-mx se plus mobo

Thanks,
Steve

You could try the USBDeview application (see link below).
It identifies the records in the registry of all USB devices currently and previously connected to the computer.

Disconnect all USB devices and delete all the listed references to the devices in USBDeveiw.
This clears out all the 'gunge' that may be causing conflicts.

When you reconnect the devices, a 'fresh' record is made in the registry.

This app. has sorted out many USB problems for me in the past and will not do any harm even if it does not sort your problem.

Worth a try?

I wonder whether this might sort out this ongoing issue:

http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/hardware/t/3642866-...

The USB mice mentioned in my post are now function perfectly as are printers, scanner, etc. All ports on the Dell laptop accept devices. However two issue remain:

1. None of the three systems will abide a SpeedTouch 121g wireless adapter. BSOD every time.
2. The Advent laptop still refuses to recognise my flash drive, which works perfectly with all other computers. Windows XP detects new hardware but fails to locate a driver.
