Time to select a new AV/Firewall combo...

[link to this post]

Hello.

Feel I need to update my computers security, and am considering 2 options:

From a good review I was thinking Avira Internet Suite as it scored well in all areas and is relatively lite in resource hogging terms, but I was somewhat shocked to find a whole one page of the 145 page manual deals with the firewall which worries me slightly... Unfamiliar with the interface, but it feels 'thin'.

or I can get ZA 8 and use the difference in price to pick up some more RAM to help with the significantly higher resource drain. More familiar with ZA, and despite the more recent clunkiness have generally been happy with them in the past.

Any advice, comments or alternativesgratefully recieved.

Yeah, don't get smart security, just stick with the AV and turn the web filtering off. Use commodo for the firewall.

Give KIS 2010 a trial,

http://esd.element5.com/demoreg.html?productid=30032...

About as comprehensive as it gets and is easily on par with Avira PSS9, surpassing it in a number of areas according to AV Comparatives though in reality both are solid all rounders.

http://www.av-comparatives.org/

ps, KIS firewall help section (online) has 13 pages tongue

Thanks another trial downloaded. KIS 2009 got a good write up, but a 15 second search hasnt thrown up any reviews of KIS 2010 yet but I'll look in to that and investigate that site properly after a bit of shut eye.

- The concern was that a security suite that alloted under 1% of its manual to the firewall is paying that aspect of its armoury far too scant attentrion for my liking, but then you knew that...

Actually having downloaded and installed it I quite like the full suite, a pity that there are reservations about its fw component. Didn't NOd32 used to do a free version? Their antivirus costs as much as several full suites... and on that subject when people recommend Commodo are we talking commodo free or commodo pay?

Thanks, much apreciated.

As it was originally suggested alongside Avira AV I assume that the poster intended the free Comodo Firewall Pro ( http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/firewal... ) component as the pay for version (IS Pro) includes a full AV component as well as other modules such as Wi-Fi security. There is also a free AV which is part of the FW Download at the above link, hence its size. Simply decide during setup whether you want the FW or the AV or both.

I can recommend the free Comodo FW version and usually after a few days at the training setting you will have few alerts except for new programs or processes. Though it does depend on which level setting you opt for each of the two modules and if installing on a known 'clean' system you can opt for the least intrusive level from the off. I can't comment on the Comodo AV module as I haven't tried it yet, preferring to use Avira for AV as a known quantity. I.E. I haven't had a chance to try out and test Comodo AV yet.

Is KIS 2010 any better than 2009?

I got so confused with the interface that I gave up with it after a while and went back to NOD32......had no clue what some of the KIS graphs meant and there was so much in there I struggled at times to locate the logs.

I'd second that - they make a good combo.
