Recover Mozilla Firefox : Profile deleted by mistake

[link to this post]

Hi,

Greetings.

I would very much appreciate some help.

I am getting the following message when I try to launch Mozilla Firefox :

' Firefox is already running but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system '.

I got a warning on AVG about a file

in C Drive

Document and Settings\username\Application Data \Mozilla\Firefox\Profile ....
So I did a crazy thing and deleted the Profile folder with numbers .

Further compounded the mistake by running C Cleaner which emptied my ' Recycle bin '.

I would really like to get back the ' Bookmark ' folder in Mozilla.

I even downloaded the latest Firefox 3.5.6 and launched the set up. Hoping that it would repair it.

I still get the above notice and am unable to launch the Firefox browser.

Any help in recovering the bookmarks would be appreciated.

I can then re-install Firefox if I have to .

I have downloaded ' Handy recovery 4.0 ' . I have not been able to figure out how to recover the data. And they allow only one file recovery per day.

I am using Windows 2000 Professional.

Thanks

JM

This probably won't help you right now - but in future - use something like Xmarks which synchronises your bookmarks online.

Also in layman terms.... the more you use the computer, the more you download and install, reboot etc etc! - the less the chance of you recovering anything! Whilst deleting data only remove the reference to data on the disk, when you download stuff onto your hard disk, the computer sticks the data in unreferenced places on the disk - thus really overwriting anything that was there. Personally, I think you've done a good job of permanently erasing any recoverable data! I'm sure someone here will disagree however!

Backing up your bookmarks is an easy process to do and will also restore them in the exact same position if you use the bookmark toolbar. To back up do the following:

1. Run FF and click on the bookmark option... in the drop down menu select organise bookmarks.

I2. n the box that pops up select import and backup...in the drop down menu select backup and you will see something like bookmarks-2009-12-30.

3. As a backup to your back up also export the bookmarks as a HTML.. that way if anything goes wrong you have a second option of restoring the bookmarks.

To restore the bookmarks follow steps 1 and 2 but select restore and locate the file you backed up.

Hope this helps

Hi,

Thanks for the posts.

I haven't backed up the bookmarks for around 7 months.

And I would very much like to recover them. If at all possible !

Thanks

JM
