USB devices

When a new USB device is connected or a previously used one to a new port, XP goes through the new hardware routine and installs everything needed. There is a table somewhere in XP that lists all devices and the posts they have been connected to along with basic parameters

Next time the same device is inserted, it appears immediately.

If the table gets corrupted devices may not work.

A friend has a camera which works on other PCs except his - and does not work on any port. He has tried various solutions but still nothing. The ports work with most other devices: memory sticks, mice &c but a couple of memory sticks also have problems.


The question is: Where does the table reside?

I don't know if the advice here is of any help. In particular it might be worth trying the "Remove and reinstall all USB controllers" bit.
