Windows 7 & printer sharing

I was round at a friend's this afternoon. She has a new Windows 7 laptop for home business, and she & her husband use a desktop PC running XP. The XP machine has their two printers connected.

She's been trying to get the printers shared with the W7 laptop, and had tried the same as her previous XP laptop. No joy.

I looked around but couldn't see anything that she'd done wrong so I Google'd the problem.

This link (scroll down to the 5th post, from jimbo45) gave us the solution we used and that worked. Seems very strange to have to set it up as a local printer to W7.

Any explanations from the W7 cognoscenti?
