Cannot connect to email accounts

[link to this post]

Hope this is the right forum. I cannot connect my daughters laptop to any email servers to collect emails eg outlook express, incredimail etc. No problem connecting to the internet wirelessly through my netgear router. I have run various malware & anti-virus programmes to no avail. Am I stupidly missing something obvious? Had no problem in the past.

I'd recheck, perhaps reenter, the account names and passwords. Perhaps they have become corrupted. It may help to know broad details of the e-mail server you want to download from.

You haven't changed ISP recenty have you?

Is the antivirus/firewall set to block the email clients?

Do you get any error message when you try connecing?

Can you do a "tracert <pop3servername>"
change <pop3servername> to the appropriate server, e.g. mine woud be smtp.ntlworld.com

Expecting matters to worsen ensures they do; expecting them to improve is merely foolishness

possibly - not sure I only use that to send emails from a client - otherwise my emails avoid the virgin systems

Can you ping the pop server? If the answer is yes it must be a mail setting problem. If the answer is no something is stopping outgoing.

Could we have a bit more information please as everyone is assuming that you are having trouble with the email assigned by your ISP. Is this the case or are you using a webmail service such as Hotmail or Gmail? Personally I don't use hotmail/livemail but I do use Gmail/Googlemail and know that in order for them to use pop3/imap that it must be activated via the web setup first.

I would also suggest the following actions within your email client.

1. Incoming mail will be either pop3 OR imap
2. Outgoing mail (when you send an email to somebody else) will be SMTP
3. Ensure your user ID and password are correct. Depending on the provider your username can either be the full email address ([email protected]) or just the name (johndoe). Check capitalisation of your pwd
4. Do you have the correct port numbers assigned for your pop3/imap/smtp within your email client?
5. Have you set yourself up to use secure autentication or not?

______

Easiest thing to do would be to wipe the account settings in your outlook r whatever you have been using and start it again step by step and be absolutely sure you are inputting the correct information.
