Office Compatibility

[link to this post]

I had already installed tegh compatibility pack to allow Office 2007/2010 files to be opened in Office 2003.

Today I received a file xxxxxx.dotx - which I know was generated on a PC witth Office 2007.

I tried to open it - failed. So, I went to a .docx file and that was fine, the compatibility pack was working. However, I updated teh CP - not easy as you need to remove teh old one first rather than just allow it to overwrite.

Tried again - failure.

The compatibility pack page provided by Microsoft states:

By installing the Compatibility Pack in addition to Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003, you will be able to open, edit, and save files using the file formats in newer versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint . The Compatibility Pack can also be used in conjunction with the Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003, Excel Viewer 2003, and PowerPoint Viewer 2003 to view files saved in these new formats. For more information about the Compatibility Pack, see 924074.

Can I get it to work ? NO?

Having a search around it looks as though Microsoft forgot to include .dotx file conversion in the pack. And in 3+ years have not bothered to do anything about it.

Had a similar problem, this worked for me (in a workaround kind of way).

If you have to swallow a frog, try not to think about it. If you have to swallow two frogs, don't swallow the smaller one first.

Spoke to Microsoft ... yes managed to get through on the phone but they want to charge £46 for "technical assistance" which will confirm they made a hash of the converter.

Problem in going from .dotx to .docx is that some of the template material may be missing but going from .dotx to .dot should retain it all.

I'll give your link a try, at least I will get started - and hopefully the owner of the file will send me a .dot but he is on a 16 hour flight at present.
