1. Click on start
2. Using the right mouse button, click on computer and select properties.
3. at the bottm left of your screen, click on WINDOWS UPDATE.
4. Top left corner of your screen, click on change settings.
5. click on NEVER CHECK FOR UPDATES and click on ok.

You'l probably now get a popup saying windows update is turned off, you can disable the message in the security centre.

Not a good idea. Just ignore specific updates, as already described.

I always turn off automatic updates and just do it manually when I choose to, as its a pain in the bottom.

It's a nuisance when your in the middle of doing something and it installs a automatic update and restarts the computer losing what your working on.
It's also a pain when you need to leave a computer on so you can have remote access to the files, when it does an automatic update and restarts and just sits in the login page or doesnt automatically restart at all.

Yes, but turning off updates is different from letting the check and download be automatic and the installation manual.

Does remote access need a user to be logged in? Pretty sure it doesn't.

The computers do need to be logged into an account as the software we use is loaded up when the user profile is started up.

if you do a correct upgrade then no e.g. vista home to 7 home vista biz to 7 pro should be seamless and have no problems but if you do a total reinstall then yes you would if you didnt back them up but its always a safe bet to back them up on the off chance the upgrade messes up or anything

you should make a /backup/ copy of all these regardless of any possible upgrade - computers do fail!
