windows restarting

Hi all,

When I turn my pc it comes u with a screnn saying something happened and have options including starting in safe mode and also last known good configuration. Whichever option I select the computer keep restarting and coming back to that screen.

Any ideas what is causing this and most importantly how do I fix this problem.

Can you get into Safe mode with command prompt? If not, I'd imagine you have either knackered memory meaning you'll need memtest, or a corrupted system file and you'll need to reinstall windows. Test the memory first imo.

Sounds like the PC is bluescreening on bootup. Sadly the default Windows response to a bluescreen is an instant reboot, meaning you go round and round, never seeing the contents of the error message.

When you bootup, keep tapping the F8 key to invoke a more complete startup menu, which will include "Disable Automatic Restart On System Failure", which will halt the system at the bluescreen, allowing you to read it and post it back on here for us .

My money is on UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME being the main error message.

Memtest found no errors.

Any ideas.

Boot into safe mode if possible. If so, it's quite possibly a driver issue (did you do any software updates before the problem?).

In safemode, open a command prompt box (DOS), and goto C:\Windows then type chkdsk /r

If that lot doesn't work, perhaps a boot up with the original windows disk and on boot, perform a repair (R).

I didn't see which specific operating system btw. Guessing at XP.

Something similar some while ago...

Went into Safemode and did an XP roll-back to an earlier time. Fixed!!

Could be possible your Restore Point was also affected, can you go back even earlier?
