when you install win7 it replaces the mbr,
you need to restore the win7 style boot for xp to work. (ie recover via win7 installation disks not xp)

Yes, the Recovery Console is just a command line screen. I Googled on another PC to see what commands were available, FIXBOOT and FIXMBR did it for me.
I'd be looking to get and data off that drive ASAP and either reformat it and rebuild, or replace it.
