Sorry I should have been more specific: autorun on the XP machine is fine with the cd/dvd drive and the SD etc. card reader, problem is only with removable hard drives over usb2 and eSATA, which is not really relevant to this thread smile

Interesting how Kaspersky think they have authority to mess with Windows settings like that.

Roxio and Nero = multisession writes to a single data CD-r or DVD-/+r which is really handy for backing up files over a period of time smile

However generally the discs can only be read on machines with compatible software until they are finalised.

Ah, of course, the nonsense value-add stuff they put in, I should have guessed!

And then people run it and apply all the "fixes" and then wonder why Windows starts misbehaving.

Actually I've never understood why autorun should be considered a vulnerability?

Edit: that's if "AutoPlay > Prompt me each time to choose an action" is selected of course.

Because it's a very simple matter to drop malware via Autoplay. This is why most responsible organisations disable it or even disable access to media which can be automatically run.
Many schools and places likew PC World etc have been plagued by 12 year olds with pen drives infecting machines of all sorts. This is why it's essential to run a full offline scan on any chain bought machine.

Edit: I'll see your edit and raise you. wink

Actually, it can be quite useful. The user isn't forced to accept the results.
