New laptop needed must support Windows XP...

Anyone one know or a new £300-400 laptop that will/does support Windows XP?

Need a new laptop and need to be able to get drivers for Windows XP.

The main thing you need to look for is the ability to turn AHCI off in the BIOS so that Windows can install.

Most HP/Dell business laptops will support Windows XP.

Is Windows 7 with Windows XP Mode (Windows XP in a VM) not sufficient for your needs?

No I simply want to take the hard drive out of now dead laptop and put in a new laptop.

Due to the hassle we've had in the past this is the only way to transfer to a new machine without having to pay EPOS to move the till software across. Also Sage is a big pain in the ass when it comes to moving to another machine.

That's fairly important information to miss out tongue

Your chances of that working are not very high. I presume the hard disk is SATA? If it's IDE good luck finding a laptop that uses IDE...

You need to make sure the CPU vendor is the same (AMD or Intel).

Beyond that though it's hit and miss whether you're going to be successful..

Yeah I guess, didn't realise the processor had to be the same type.

Ok I'll have to look on ebay for a replacement screen then.

If it's just the screen, there's a shop in Coventry called Computer Basement (also does online ordering) that supplies &/or fits for very good prices.

Disk controller also needs to ideally be the same as well. Switching between disk controller chipsets can be a nightmare with XP as there are a number of steps that have to be taken to replace the disk controller drivers - did it once years ago and it was not a simple process.

It is one of these things that may or may not work. I have managed to stick a working version of Xp with software onto another computer via using image software, but other times it have failed.

The other problem is if your Xp is a OEM version there is a chance it will bomb anyway as it will be produced for that make and model of laptop.

Thanks everyone.

Going to use an external screen to get by for a couple of days then hopefully I will have found and bought the correct video cable to replace.
