Compatibility with Win 8

We are in the throes of getting used to Win8 on a new laptop (Dell 64bit). Quite a culture shock coming from Vista!

Our inkjet is an elderly Canon IP 5000, still giving good service. However the driver cd is tossed out of Windows 8. Printer documentation says:
'USB operation can only be guaranteed on a PC with preinstalled Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Me or Windows 98'.
No mention even of Vista, which gives you a good idea of its age! However it offends me to throw out a perfectly good device, for which cartridges are still freely available. I have contacted Canon, but there's total silence.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Be prepared to throw the printer out.

It goes without saying but have you tried plugging it in and seeing if Windows can figure it out itsself?

Have you tried the Vista/Windows 7 add-on module?

As Pipexer says - have you tried letting W8 sort it for you?

It does look as though the drivers are provided through windows update. So try plugging it in, then do a windows update pass to see if it downloads the driver for you.....

Frankly that's always been my first port of call. Installing drivers from the manufacturer more often than not brings in a load of extra [censored] that does more harm than good.
