Done that. The errors just mention the Search.

No service of that name, and nothing under Windows Update.

Another thought. Has the new image been validated as genuine with MS?

An image to a new hard disk shouldn't need reactivating. It doesn't constitue a different PC under Microsoft rules.

Quite probably, but worth double-checking, given that non-genuine will prevent updates iirc.

It certainly will, but I'm puzzled by the lack of an error code or a meaningful message in the system logs.

There is a separate log for Windows updates called "windowsupdate.log" IIRC. It's just a plain text file and it should be located in the C:\Windows directory. Have a look there for any likely looking log files, or use search to find all *.log files. That file really ought to give some hint.

If you go into system properties does it indicate that Windows is activated with a Windows Genuine Advantage logo?

Virgin (ADSL) => Namesco => Newnet => O2 => Plusnet => Zen => Newnet => Zen => Freeola => Vivaciti (using O2 Wholesale DSL) => Xilo (C&W Wholesale) => Xilo (O2 Wholesale)

states Windows activated and has the logo in the bottom right hand corner.
