I'm glad you accept that your sweeping statement was inaccurate. The simple fact is that there is no universal support in browsers for HTML 5 and there is unlikely to be until there is an HTML 5 standard. It's a bit silly to single one browser out.

Not silly at all - its the most used browser and yet cant handle Canvas, which is a tiny bit of a problem...

If the most used browser doesn't support that particular element of HTML 5 then it would be a foolish designer who relied upon it. I think that you have ht the nail on the head there - Internet Explorer is the most popular browser.

I wonder how many users have the automatic install option for these updates and now have it without realising. My online banking site says that it is compatible up to and including IE9 - maybe they haven't updated their message yet! I'll give it a month or two before pressing the button, I think.

I installed it before the Windows Update rollout as I wanted to test my own website. It seems to work fine and most CSS3 seems to be supported (unlike IE9). I have seen a small glitch with <header>s. A note for anyone occasionally writing CSS code: a number of CSS3 features, such as gradients, follow the final W3C standard which is different from the versions implemented as -o-, -moz-, -webkit- and earlier W3C specs. Most other browsers have also implemented these finalised versions - check the documentation.

If that is the case the Bank needs to get their [censored] into gear and either properly test or just change the text. Windows 8 has been RTM for 6 months now and the IE10 developer preview more than a year. It is just laziness on their part and there really is no excuse for it.

Wouldn't say it was drastic action. Took less than 5 minutes and all sites work without any messing about. Why should I select another mode in order that a browser should browse?

Pressing compatibility button takes 1 second.

And what does "compatibility" do exactly? Might well set it to be similar to IE9 therefore no point in upgrading yet!

But then it would be rather silly of Microsoft to be left behind...
