Win 8 again

We've been thoroughly accustomed to using our internet 'favorites'. However in Win8 we find that the left foot of the screen also displays squares for innumerable recently used sites. Try as we may we can't get rid. Tried deleting them individually but they just keep popping back immediately.

Our expensive doorstop of a manual tells how to create favorites. It didn't bother to reveal how to delete them, but we cracked that.

The book has never even heard of 'recent places'. - recent being, in our case, a misnomer. How do we delete them permanently, please, preferably en bloc?

For 'Recent' substitute the word 'Frequent'. The presence of all these little boxes means that our favourites are shoved over to the right of the row at the bottom of the screen. Why can't we just delete them all?
