Re: faulty DVD/CD give BSoD in windows 8

If you want to quickly try Linux without putting your drive back in have you thought about installing Linux onto a USB flashdrive and doing a custom install and putting the linux boot manager onto the flash drive so the windows boot manager doesn't even know it's there,

As for win8 I can easily see it being a MS driver issue rather than a specific hardware one.

My dad was bought a new computer last Xmas by my brother and he has had Dell out every month so far to fix some issue or another due to win 8 problems with hardware issues and finally Dell admitted that Win8 was rubbish and they downgraded his computer to win7 and all the issues went away.

Don't know why people defend MS in general and win8 in particular as it is an absolute mess.

The whole project has gone wrong with $900 million of unsold surface sitting unsold that now are having an aggressive price cut to try and clear them.

Anyways I have gone to Linux and the only thing I use win7 for now is video editing as my video capture card being 5 years old will only work with pinnacle studio 14 as that has the driver built in.

Pinnacle 16 apparently does not and so when I can get round to it I shall be buying a new card that does work with Linux.

I got a 128GB Maxtor drive with Mint on that i boot up to now and again. I use the bios boot system to boot from it when I require it.

I know it is not a hardware problem, it is certainly a driver problem. i would do a clean install but the problem is the hassle of doing so as it is not just software I have to reinstall, it is a load of plug-ins for Vegas and photoshop as well.

windows 8 do seem a bit faster, but it is not worth it if there are still problems. the update 8.1 seems more to do with the Metro Ui than anything else.

i know of someone who down graded from 8 to 7 or in his words, upgraded, they got a Laptop and needed 7.

I suppose it is like other things, people defend Android, apple and other products. If it works for them then fine.

The whole project has gone wrong with $900 million of unsold surface sitting unsold that now are having an aggressive price cut to try and clear them.

The Surface Rt is horrid, really limited, but then I find that with all tablets with a limited Os on, like Android and Ipads. i don't see the point in them, but some people do.

I know someone who got a Surface Rt because he thought it would be better than his laptop and he would not get viruses and stuff like that. which he don't, but he have found out how limited the RT is.

The pro looks better, but over priced.

I got a HD camcorder so all my files just get dragged onto the computer, no capture card needed, i have got one, well it is a TV tuner as well, but I don't use it these days.

Kdenlive is available on Linux, which may come up to Pinnacle standard, I have not see all used Pinnacle for years. Kdenlive is ok, but it falls below Vegas.

Windows 8 has probably installed the wrong drivers

I had a netgear wireless USB once and windows installed it as a Realtek card automatically. In device manager it saw it as Realtek not netgear. It was no end of problems, bsod all the time, then I installed the netgear drivers. Perfect.

Possibly something similar!

Unfortunately no - once Explorer hangs, it is extremely hard to get a new instance running again.

I had trouble writing data as a USB drive today - some files would just stop copying with 0 speed, timer not going down etc etc

And lovely old Explorer hangs. Can't get Task Manager up (as Explorer has hung - even with the Vulcan salute). Fortunately Metro was still accessible, so you would think a quick logout and in would suffice, but no - the hard drive light was still continually on and a new DVD was still being seen as the old one - even though the new one was now blank and had no name.

Sp I had to reset the machine - which in turn caused problems with booting (hard drive detection was initially very slow). Its all okay now though in that regard.

Microsoft has released consoles and tablets, but still cant recover from a faulty DVD

Wow never had this on my windows machine, I often had 100+ days of uptime and only restated for windows updated when I eventually felt they were absolutely necessary.

That was Windows 7 - now using osx which for me has been more buggy than windows was.

A bad disk just made my computer crash - I would cross it off. Explorer would close (start etc would dissapear) and then explorer reloaded. Happened a few times. Never needed a full reboot over it.

I've always found Windows recover from a bad CD/DVD has always been extremely difficult - from Windows 95 to Windows 8, it's a problem.

Faultly hard drives recover has been fine though - usually have a limited time to recover anything before it totally packs in, but usually you can at least carry on okay...

From 10.5 (or was it 10.4?) , OSX has been rather flakey - I remember upgrading to, I think it was 10.6 and stability decreased quicker than a roadrunner escaping from a coyote. I found stability for OSX machines to be generally poor, which was one reason I went back to Windows.

On xp I definitely had a fair few bsod and lock ups during burning disks. If it failed mid way through the burning process it would hang for about 10 minutes and then bsod.

My newer machine didn't have these issues. I'd assumed windows 7 solved it but its probably down to the individual hardware more than the os, especially given I don't have these major issues now with different hardware.

Only what I put above.

driver irq not less or equal, storport.sys

I done a complete restore now form scratch, the problems is I now have to stick all my software on, I did not want to do that, but it seems the best way.

Annoying i must admit, done a complete reformat and reinstalled 8, going to test it it first before I put all my software back on.
