My recent updates just hung and I had to do a power off shutdown to turn off the laptop. I managed to do a repair of Windows 8 but now I'm being offered 2966827 which seems identical to 2966825 which was the one which caused the crash (it has now installed correctly). Both seem to have the same name and do the same thing. Are both needed?

You've said your running windows 8 or you not you running windows 8.1 as I thought you couldn't get updates to windows 8 after April/may time this year(Microsoft attempting to force updates)?
You may want to check this out as it may be another issue as well
That sounds familiar! Although not the update I mentioned there was clearly something not right with this month's offerings. Thanks chaps, all seems well now. Can Microsoft remove an item from the updates list once it's been accessed on a specific computer then? It will be interesting to see if my duplicate update disappears sometime soon. Presumably the list is checked after every startup.
Microsoft can only remove it from their end - ie take it off the available updates. It's up to the consumer to remove it from their pc. I tend to create a restore point before adding updates on "patch Tuesday"
