GWXconfigmanager.exe

[link to this post]

Does anyone really know what this is & why MS have installed it?

Although listed as a Win Update (under Knowledge Base 3035583), MS admits that it is a new program that:-
This update enables additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications when new updates are available to the user. It applies to a computer that is running Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

However MS does NOT:-
* Explain what it does & what "additional" capabilities it has.
* Explain why it needs to require regular access to the Internet (over & above the normal Update checking)
* Explain why they sent it out as an Update, when it clearly is NOT!

Very odd. And if you google it (which I'm sure you've done) there are lots of people in China and Japan - where it seems to have been rolled out a couple of days ago - asking the same question.

I just popped it into the hidden list. No obvious point to it from the user's perspective.

Seems very logical.

I think it's for the Chinese market. They are getting it free.

It probably gives you the option, and/or provides the facility to do it.

By all means hide it, forget that you hid it, and promptly kick up a fuss when you mysteriously can't upgrade Windows in the future.

Everyone with Win7+ legal or illegal is supposed to be getting Win 10 for free in the first year of release I believe.
