hit the hardware reset button, it carried on after that.

I am now able to get to the desktop, as expected I Cannot activate tho but am now at least on a newer build than before.

So the bad news?

1 - seems I been kicked out of insider program.
2 - will I ever be able to activate after july 29? who knows
3 - the install wasnt clean, having to hit the hardware reset button is not ideal, is possibile something didnt configure properly as a result.

On this build I do now have access to the fast/slow ring settings but because microsoft cut people off no update is detected.

I am on a pro build so can see the defer updates setting box. No idea how this deferal works given it cannot even detect any updates at all not even on the normal windows update.

Its the keys again. Search for the 10166 keys and change them I think www.tenforums.com may have them. I was on 10122 and got no response from windows update for the new build, it just kept searching and searching and I couldn't do anything else so hit the hardware reset.

After that it wouldn't boot with a DPC_watchdog blue screen so I restored a backup to the win 10 partition and tried to upgrade by mounting the 10166 ISO and running setup to do an in place upgrade. At this time windows update found the new build 10240 so I cancelled the in place upgrade and went with the windows update.

Took about 45 mins to upgrade to 10240 and I like how the new browser Edge inserts apostrophes into wouldn't and couldn't in your posts.

I'm currently trying to see if WMP has the codecs to play recorded tv on my Panasonic HD recorder. Win 10 can browse the HDD but cant seem to stream the content only up load. Over wireless its taking ages to upload from the recorder.

I also tried VLC to view HDD recorder content but again that had to be uploaded and it played it, although there was a 0% stuck in the middle of the screen, the modern app seems still a bit buggy.

Edit: I am also on pro and I read somewhere that deferred updates are for 8 months to give business a chance to prepare but after that installed.

well I now have a homebrew 10240 iso, as it turns out since I got the 10166 iso from the same place that was also possibly a homebrew iso as well.

The keys I used successfully on 10166 i got from here (but activation is blocked).

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/wiki/insi...

Today I will install 10240 from the homebrew iso using the published 10240 keys and want to check the following.

1 - will the 10240 keys activate.
2 - will I have the removed timebomb as others have reported.

For now I will forget about the weird install hang forever issue given it was a homebrew iso, and clean installation of 10240 isnt even supported, its a upgrade only install officially.

ok new development.

windows update has detected build 10240 and its currently downloading.

So I am holding off the clean 10240 install currently.

Question tho if i may.

For the first time ever I used a microsoft account for signing in, my microsoft account has a very complex password, not designed to be typed in but is copied and pasted from a secure clipboard in my password manager.

However it seems windows 10 requires this password to authenticate on it instead of having a separate local password, is there a way around this apart from enabling automatic login?

after updating to 10240 I managed to change the key, but the key is blocked by activation servers, so there is no way to activate insider keys currently.

also edge sucks compared to IE11.

From what I can see all of the following are missing.

No options to toggle tls 1.1 1.0 1.2 etc.
No options to toggle gpu acceleration
No options to set file cache location (I like to use ram disk)
No security zones
No tracking protection lists
No addons
No advanced cookie settings
No per domain settings
No options to adjust certificate verification
No options to adjust UTF-8 and IDN
No toggle for crash protection
No tab options

Basically edge feels like a mobile orientated app, as it uses the "modern" interface.

I've not tried Edge, might give it ago at some point.
I did an upgrade from Win 8.1 and the key copied across.

well IE11 is still on win10 so its not a big issue currently, but I expect microsoft wont upgrade IE11, and it will eventually be obselete.

e.g. to me choosing the cache location as well as adjusting if its used or not is a very basic feature I expect from a browser but its missing in EDGE (possibly might be a hidden option somewhere tho).

In reply to a post by zyborg47:
i have got 10240,
I had to link Windows 10 to my MS account to get it, now I will unlink it.,

And when you unlink it you get
"The information associated with your Microsoft account still exists" frown

I ended up creating a new user, logging in with my MS account on the new account
updated it to final build then deleted the new account.

Not sure on a workaround for the complicated password problem maybe auto logon is the way to go.

Solved my problem of remote desktop on my Windows Phone. The win 10 ethernet was on a public network where remote desktop is blocked. Had to change to a private network by turning on device discovery in modern settings then I could connect. Seems public network is default.

As for keys they are going to disappear after 29 July, a new activation model is being rolled out that is device specific.

You can set up a 4 digit pin instead of using the more complex email password. Like yourself I have a nightmare password to type correctly and using a simple 4 digit pin is far superior.

Its in settings, accounts, sign in options, PIN

Once that is set up and when you log in next chose your log on type at start up smile
