Deleting it out of the registry might help...

Yes I did that as part of deleting the drivers, thanks.

So after going through the registry deleting all the occurrences of the printer name string I could find, I still had a random printer icon in devices and printers showing the status of being removed.

So I reinstalled the printer specifying the port to use as a WSD port and rebooted.

Now I have the same printer icon now showing as the default printer, and it's working. It's status is still being removed however

Well that's progress.

Can't you search for strings in the Registry? Probably too late now as you don't want to do it again.

Yes, I did. I couldn't delete all of them though
