Issue with "File Explorer"

[link to this post]

I have encountered an issue with my PC on Windows 10Pro. Recently whilst trying to tidy up the "Quick Start" in "File Explorer" I think I messed up settings now I find the left side preview panel is blank and the file list icons disappear. All the items in "Control Panel" also disappear .
These icons and items are all present and correct when I start or restart Windows but disappear over few minutes ( not sure how long).
If I open "File Explorer" to save an item or file the full normal list and icons appear to allow me to choose save destination however when I re-open "File Explorer" to find the saved file I am presented with a screen showing limited or blank icons and cannot fins anything.
I have tried resetting "File Explorer" view when I can see "Control Panel" icons at start up but despite several attempts to get back to stable view it reverts.
This is a screenshot showing my issue with "File Explorer"

"File Explorer" does recover but I cannoty seem to get "Control Panel" icons to recover at same time unless I reboot.
Any help in solving this mystery would be much appreciated before it drives me mad.
