It seems there are performance problems with Windows 11 on newer Ryzen processors, so I'll be holding off on this upgrade for the time being.

It is on older ones as well by all accounts, I saw a post from someone who have the same CPU as me, Ryzen7 1700, and they have noticed the difference. I have not, I have even done a test render in Hitfilm and it was fine.
It is the chipset by all accounts not the CPU, so it will be a patch for Windows.

I've just forced tried it on an old Laptop to see what all the fuss is about, and to be quite honest I'm glad I did, to me it's just a bit "meh", it should have been just another Windows 10 update. The worst thing for me is all the restrictions on the taskbar, especially when you are forced to have combined taskbar buttons, so you cannot separate having 2 same programs open on 2 different monitors. At least one thing, now I've tried it out, it has actually saved me money on buying a new laptop and 3 new desktops, as I'm now sticking with Windows 10!

I think you hit the nail on the head, this is why I said more seasoned Windows users may not like it, if all you do is click on an icon to run some software and browse the web then it will be fine.
I find not being able to right-click and close all windows a bit of a pain.

Windows 11 offers nothing to be honest apart from a new look, which I do like the look of, but not the restrictions, Windows 11 seems to a bit smoother than 10, but that is about it, stay with Windows 10 if I was you, i will certainly be going back to it at some point.

I am still running W8.1 on my laptop, It's an i5 processor so I assume W11 is not for me.

I would seriously consider updating to Windows 10 since security updates for W8.1 stopped a long while ago. Whilst Windows 11 is not for me either at the moment, come the year 2025 when security updates for Windows 10 stops, I will update just for those reasons alone.

Depends upon which generation of i5 it is. But if the laptop came with Windows 8 then it is almost certainly too old to run Windows 11. (Personally, I would upgrade it to Windows 10, but each to their own.)

It should work, you may need to muck around if it has no TPM, but it should work.
But as others said, maybe you should try Windows 10 first, I am surprised you have not updated, but then I licked windows 8 more than 10, so I would love to be able to run it without it crashing on this machine.

As for what I said above about not being able to right click and select close all windows, for some reason that seems to be working now. Very strange.

i5 is the range (i3, i5, i7, i9) of Intel processors. The first digit (or 2 digits) of the next numbers identifies the generation.

examples:

i7-4790 is a 4th generation i7 (desktop)
i5-10210U is a 10th generation i5 (laptop)

Windows 11 pretty much requires an 8th generation Intel (i3, i5, i7, or i9) or later, and a TPM 2.0 module. That really means computers purchased in/from 2018. (The technical press have debated this at length and concluded MS is using security features in these new processors)

I agree with the others, please upgrade to Win10 for security reasons. Win 10 will be getting security updates until 2025, and you can often upgrade for free (yes still).

As I've said previously, I've forced Windows 11 onto my old Lenovo T61 laptop (ancient T7300 cpu) and everything is working fine, I'll see if I will get any updates in the next few weeks:

Ha, amusing! I have an X61 with a similar processor also with 4GB RAM that is running Win10. Neither of these laptops has a TPM, long before that was invented.

I doubt they will get any updates. Microsoft isn't pulling any punches this time.

You may be better with Win10 or Linux on a Core2Duo smile

On Windows 11 installation, updates did get installed including driver updates.
The Laptop did have Win10 on previously, but just wanted to see if Win11 would work on it smile
