Win 10/11 Storage spaces

[link to this post]

Have been experimenting with mirror disks but have come to a sudden halt trying to create a mirror of my data archive in disk management. No matter what I do trying to create the mirror I get the error that security is enabled so unable to convert to dynamic disks. All my disks are GPT. I have tried converting to MBR but again same error.

While googling this problem I came across an article about mirroring which suggested using command line diskpart to mirror the drive but again the security error.

Later in the article it suggested an alternative of Storage Spaces so I have wiped to disks in order to create a storage pool. Fortunately I have a backup of the archive on external USB ssd. After creating the storage pool with two way mirror I then restored my archive to the storage space and I think I have achieved a mirror from two disks. Can anyone confirm?

You have indeed created a mirror. Note that you don’t have to mirror all of the disks. You can create some volumes in the storage pool that are mirrored and some that are not. Add another disk to the pool and you could use the equivalent of RAID 5 for some volumes.

But I don’t think you can boot from a Storage Spaces volume on most computers. It needs a special UEFI implementation.

One thing, why? It is easy enough to back the data up. I have Raid 1 on the NAS. If you want mirror or raid then most computer main boards will support raid, which i think would be far better than anything Microsoft does.

My MB doesn't support RAID is why.

Just as well I mirrored the drive as my Seagate HDD has thrown up a Caution on Crystal Disk Info. Uncorrectable sector count = 1. Bunged another drive into the space to be on the safe side although the mirror should provide data integrity.

Fair enough, but to be honest I am surprised at that, even my old Asrock board I used for my AMD FX cpu supported raid.

Don't forget that RAID or anything like it is still not a backup and back up stuff that is important.
