Take a look at Protonmail - web based interface is really good, fully supports your own custom domains, and privacy conscious.

I like using a mail application, and Proton Mail Bridge is only available to paid subscribers. Running my own mail POP3/SMTP server with Thunderbird seems the best solution for me.

I ran my own POP3/IMAP4/SMTP server on my broadband line for 10 years, then moved to a rented server in the cloud trying to get an IP with a better 'reputation' but eventually went back to hosted email from a big supplier due to problems getting mails through to recipients. Mostly users of GMail (often branded behind a domain).

Most cloud providers now block port 25 outgoing altogether. There are several free SMTP solutions which can act as a smarthost for the mail transfer agent though.

Unsurprising... and yes, I was thinking of outbound service providers, free is impressive.

Some don't even ask for a credit card, they must have very rigorous spam detection algorithms on outgoing e-mail in order to shut down accounts of spammers. And of course they provide SPF & DKIM records for your domain name. Very good for free, I agree!
