Slow speed

Hello All,

I have a Zen 8000 Active account and my router (Draytek Vigor 2800G) informs me that I have a download speed of 6400000 (presumably this is bps); However, regardless of where I attempt to download a file from I only get 260ish kbps download speed.

I noticed the thread further down which is similar except that I dont get higher speeds for any time after a router reboot.

I have emailed Zen a few times now and each time I just get a generic reply telling me that it's probably down to the exchange having recently been upgraded; but am I right in saying that if my router tells me it has a solid download speed of 6400000bps then I should be seeing downloads somewhere in that ball park and not the 260kbps that I am getting? or is there more too it? and if so how can I test the speed I can expect to be getting.

I'm not saying that Zen are being unhelpful; on the contrary, they are by far the best ISP I have been with to date; It's just that I am not getting the answers as to why my download speed isnt better than it is when my router 'appears' to be telling me that the linespeed between my home and the exchange is capable of 2 and half times or so more that I'm seeing on downloads.

I appreciate that there will also be contention slowdown at times etc but I am never seeing speeds above 260-280kbps regardless of where I go to download and I would expect to see speeds somewhere closer to the 600ish kbps on occasion as reported by my router. Also, the ADSL Guide speed checker only reports 1.9mb download speed.

I know I should be getting more speed but am unsure as to why I arent; I bought the expensive Draytek router because I wanted a good solid fast router and this was the one recommended by IT friends who told me it will be able to handle the ADSL2 type speeds..

My exchange is Sowerby Bridge and I live only 1.3 miles away (as the crow doesn't fly; but cars do)

have you tried multiple streams at the same time?
see if you can fill your pipe with a few simultaneous dls

dont forget that any single dl will depend on many factors not the least of which is the speed of the connection at the server

If you never see more than 1.9Mbits on AG, and can't get any more by downloading with more threads, Isn't that a classic "s tuck BRAS" symptom, or have Zen support already ruled that out?

Tried 2 files from Fileplanet's so called fast servers and 1 file from a friends server; 3 files simultaneously and they all tallied up to around 180kbps speed in total.

Hmmmm; I've also emailed Zen with this issue again..

It's not just me expecting too much is it? 180Kbps total bandwidth on a linespeed that my router clearly shows as 6400000bps; surely should yield a better data rate than 180kbps, even during the day on a contended system?

fortunately i merely have to mention it to the ts (at A&A) and in a few hours i get re-bras'd

Your 'IT friends' need shot as DSL MAX is NOT ADSL2. Still a nice router though!

As others have said it looks very much like a BRAS issue. How long have you been connected to the DSL Max service?

tbh I'm not entirely sure how long I've been on the service for as the various upgrade dates etc seem to be a bit fuzzy.

The exchange says it's 'Green' for ADSL Max and has said that since back end of March when I believe BT did thier thing at the exchange; BUT, I have since seen mentions of further upgrades that were penned in for the 15th June (last week) to carry out 'Upgrades' due to the exchange being slow or something ???

Tech Support at Zen have told me that this may or may not take place (the BT upgrade) so perhaps I need to be more patient. I just find it frustrating that I cant get a definate answer from anywhere or do some kind of test that will prove whether it's BT, Zen, or most likley Me who's causing the slow speed.

I gotta say; it's all very confusing; All I know is that the exchange is 'supposed' to be ADSL MAX compliant and that my router tells me the line rate is around 6Mb?? short of that I really dont know what else I can do to test whether it is me who's the cause

So it could be BT at fault?? (it's bound to be me or my impatience)

When did you regrade to the MAX service though? Or did you join Zen recently when it was the only product you could have gone for?

If your line is syncing at the speed you say then it is MAX enabled and the exchange must also be MAX enabled. That would suggest either BT's BRAS is limiting your speed or Zen have you limited on their systems?
