Thinking of coming back to my first broadband ISP

[link to this post]

Zen!

I am considering moving back to Zen (this time I might pay quarterly to be sure I stay here for a while!) and I have a few questions about the web space I am sure some of you can answer to. May I apologize if the post is a bit long, but I need to make my questions as detailed as possible to have clear answers.

1 - If I want to use a domain name with each of the 2 web spaces provided with Zen packages, can I?

2 - It is possible to keep the domain with my domain registrar and point to DNS servers, or would I only be able to point the URL (masking)?

3 - If pointing to DNS was not possible, can I transfer 1 or 2 domains to Zen and still keep the 1GB web space x2?

4 - how much bandwidth you have with these 1GB spacex2? I do recall a file limit size of 50MB or something like that, but are there any actual limits in bandwidth terms? I mean if you have several 50mb files, but plenty of visitors, is that OK?

5 - Can I upload videos and multimedia files (legal of course) and make them available for people to see? I have a project involving interactive languages tuition and this would be very useful. Widely, can you put files in your web sites for people to download (eBooks, etc) as long as you respect the size limit, or is there some limitations to this?

6 - if you sign for the home services (20Gb or 50GB bandwidth) can you still use this web space on a commercial basis? I know Zen are quite happy to sign small businesses in these packages, but I rather ask here first just in case, as this is the main appeal for me with this Zen packages.

OK that's about it.

Asking here, because the Zen guys are not in the office anymore (well, not all of them I suppose ) but if some chap from Zen came along and read this, he (or she) might convince me to sign as soon as this evening

I have been round and round in circles and at the end of the day Zen seems to be the best offer around when you consider everything (except if you only need to do a Google now and then and check your email), from price to quality of service and if you have professional needs with yor Internet.

Well, I have found answers searching the forum for previous post and reading Zen legal terms and AUP, I understand I can use the web space for commercial purposes (not to resell it but to promote my professional activties or my small business) with no given bandwidth limit as long as is legal and I don't abuse the resources (like uploading tons of videos that would do the rounds in forums and so on), that pointing to the URL is OK, but one final question remains:

- It is possible to point to the Zen hosting server DNS (I am ready to pay extra for this) and allow me to use the inclusive 2Gb space?

Long ago when I was customer here, there was an option to pay

Hello jcrom. Can't answer all your questions but yes you can point your domain name to your free web space but not sure how it works or looks when people use it. Although there is a 50mb limit on uploading files there is not a set bandwidth allowance. I understand you can use it how you wish as long as you don't abuse it or go silly with the bandwidth.

I have my domain and a bronze hosting package with zen and still have my 2Gb of free webspace. HTH.

Currently you can't point the A record for domain names directly to the inclusive 2x1GB of webspace (or more precisely you can, but it wouldn't work, as there is no mechanism to allow customers to add host headers to their space on the server)

This means you can do redirection or URL masking, but not a direct domain pointing with the free web space - even if the domain is hosted with Zen.

You can of course get a cPanel hosting package in addition -

I signed up!

I might use a Cpanel option and embed my content from the free web space or mask, seems quite easy to do.

Can you confirm that use of the free web space for commercial purposes is OK, James?

(Seems obvious as the 8Mb packages are assumed to be available to small business but I better ask)

From memory and the legal blurb yes it's fine, so long as you understand that there is no SLA on the webspace and Zen are not responsible for it suddenly not working.

You can get a cheap hosting package to host your domain with and just pull your videos/images from your free webspace.

Yes, I should be OK with that.

Just phoned Zen as I couldn't really get into the portal for the first time, and I am pleased to see that the people on the phone are always so helpful as they were in the past and seem happy in what they are doing. Well the woman (should I say girl?) I spoke with was certainly helpful and I could "hear" her smile on the phone.

Looking good.
