Changing IP address

[link to this post]

I'm migrating to Zen and see that it is only possible to have a static IP address. As I don't actually need a static IP address, i would have preferred to have a dynamic address as it seems more secure against hackers etc. It seems a shame that there's no dynamic address option.
However, given that there isn't such an option, how easy would it be to change the static IP address periodically if I wanted to?

I am not sure why you think a static IP address is less secure.

When using dynamic addresses, you have no idea what the last person to have that address got up to. You could well be connecting to a whole range of problems.

At least with a Zen static address, you know it is only ever used by you (and has quite possibly never been used at all before you get it).

Relax, and enjoy what Zen have to offer.

You will not be able to change the address once it has been assigned to you.

Hi,

It would not be possible to change the IP address.

In all honesty, it would be false to assume you're safe from hacker activity by having dynamic IP addresses - in fact you could end up the victim of somebody else's activity because a dynamic IP has been used in a way that has made it a target. Typically a lot of malware will just look for IPs with obvious vulnerabilities so the best advice is to ensure you're running a firewall so it isn't worth anybody's while to target you - most probably they'd move on to a far softer target.

regards,
Phil.

There is no evidence that a dynamic IP is more secure than a static IP.

I have NEVER had any security problems associated with my static IP.

Provided that you have protection via your modem/router (many have a hardware firewall incorporated- but you need to check), antivurus software and software firewall, you need not worry about 'hackers'

As far as I'm aware, it is not possible change your assigned IP.

Thanks for the prompt replies. Good to see they're consistent too. Looks like I was worrying about nothing.

Must learn to chill more...

I thought exactly the same as you when I first migrated to Zen back in May last year.

I was with AOL and was on a dynamic IP address system and I also wondered if I would be a target for hackers but in the 14 months that I've been with Zen, I have never had any trouble although I am behind a NAT router firewall.

I also run a software firewall (Sygate) as well for peace of mind!

I've been with zen for 4 to 5 years i cant remember exact date anymore lol. All that time i've had the same single static ip and i've never encountered any problems with being hacked or targeted specificly.

I don't know whether you have migrated to Zen (like me) but your start date should be shown in the Customer Portal?

Just wanna post something i noticed earlier today too.
The OP might want to read this.

http://forum.zensupport.co.uk/thread/27245.aspx

Seems that having a static ip if someone wants to target you specificly can be slightly more problematic but still overall pretty safe.
