Download usage

If you go over the 20Gb limit do you just get charged for an extra 1Gb?

I'm on 19.5 with two days to go

My understanding is that you have to purchase the extra and, until you do, you will be "cut off".

Which is why I am still on an old legacy product..

You get limited access - you can access the portal to top up your account. Any extra gigs purchased that you don't use is carried over, so if you think this could be a fairly regular occurrence, it might be wise to bank a few gigs.

OK thanks for the replies, just used a lot this month, normally have at least 5gb spare!

Are the extra gigs that you purchase carried over indefinitely, or do they run out after a few months?

Thanks

Indefinitely as far as I'm aware.

Yep, just read what they say when you purchase more-

"This wizard allows Zen customers on one of our capped DSL products to purchase additional download usage. The wizard can be run at anytime to "top up" your download usage and ensure there are no interruptions in your service should you go over your monthly allowance. If you have used all your monthly allowance and your account is restricted, purchasing additional capacitiy using this wizard will unrestrict your account immediately. Any unused amount in your usage bank will be carried over indefinately from month to month."

Think they know that they have spelt indefinitely incorrectly, or is it me that's wrong!?!?!?

There's lots of spelling errors on Zen pages. I guess spelling isn't the strong point of the guy who designs them. If you ever fail to connect to the portal, you'll find a page with a glaring one, that has been pointed out to them several times, but is still there.

Yes, but it would be much nicer if it just did it automatically, like some other ISPs do.

We may not be around to do it manually - and servers would then go offline.

I am still waiting patiently to get off the [unlimited] legacy product

To be more specific, It would be nice to have the option to automatically purchase extra up to 'an' amount (either customer defined or Zen defined). Not everyone would want to be purchasing extra bandwidth automatically, and of those who might want to, some would want to put some limit on it.

I suspect this is already on the 'to do' list from Zens perspective, and competing for resource with other customer requirements. And if not, hopefully someone will take note of this thread

Cheers
Ruz

I prefer the PlusNet approach. When you reach the limit, instead of restricting you to the portal, you are just rate limited to 128kbits and get an email notification.

Isn't the Plusnet approach to rate limit you to about 128kbps before you reach the limit too though?

I think once you get into double digit usage in a single month (11gb I believe) the traffic shaping restrictions start seriously kicking in. Even before that, yes, I think you're shaped across most popular bandwidth intensive ports and applications.

It is something we have discussed. If there is a lot of support for a feature like this then let us know and the powers that be can debate it some more.

I think those business users who have a number of accounts at various locations (such as myself in my work capacity, and therioman) would agree that it would be very useful to have a feature where additional usage could be automatically added to an account, up to a certain limit, once the standard usage allowance had been reached.

It would certainly avoid the headache of manually dealing with our users (read: "customers") who had hit their limit, but it would need to have the safeguard of a set limit, otherwise there is the potential for unexpectedly big bills!

Hi Mike

If you have an account manager, can you speak to them to put this request through. This is the correct channel for larger accounts to make requests.

As requirements have to come from the business rather than developers that would make sense. If not then I will let the appropriate people know there is a demand for this (if indeed there is).

Thanks

In reply to:

If you have an account manager

We don't. How do we go about getting one? What constitutes a "larger account" (we currently have over 30 connections)?
