Baffled by blocking!

[link to this post]

One of my customers contacted me saying that he was unable to get to his website http://www.stevecharrettmagic.co.uk. He was also unable to log into the mail server.

Subsequent investigation revealed that he was unable to access any of the domains I host, for example http://www.winchester-operatic.org.uk. All sites are hosted on the same server at NetHosted (85.13.238.130). He can access the NetHosted website on 85.13.250.34

He is accessing the net through a Netgear DG834, connected through Zen.

We seem to have pinned the problem down to the machine he is accessing the net with - another machine going through the same router has no problems.

Flushing the cache and the other usual "tricks" seems to have made no difference. He uses AVG Internet Security, but uninstalling that doesn't seem to change anything.

I am baffled, and Zen, NetHosted and AVG support haven't any ideas either.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

What does "nslookup <sitename>" reveal?

Is there something up with the "hosts" file?

Which browser is he using? If it's IE has he tried with Firefox?

Can he telnet to the website on port 80? Does he get something similar to the output below? (might need to press some random keys until you get the output)

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN">
<html><head><title>501 Method Not Implemented</title></head><body>
<h1>Method Not Implemented</h1>
<p>GET to /index.html not supported.<br /></p>
<p>Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to
use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.</p>
<hr>
<address>Apache/2.2.9 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.9 OpenSSL/0.9.7a mod_auth_passthrough/2.1
mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 PHP/4.4.9 Server at jupiter.solardns.com Port 80</address>
</body></html>

Connection to host lost.

Are there any toolbars running in IE or FF (e.g. Google / Yahoo / etc)?

What happens if you manually add the entry to the HOSTS file?

What about a traceroute?

ISTR an issue with connectivity problems that stemmed from the MTU setting. Alas I can't remember the details....may be worth checking what it is given that XP automatically "optimises" the MTU.
