Weird Speed Issues

[link to this post]

Have been getting weird slow speeds during afternoons. Change gateway and problem solved. Contacted Zen last week about this and Ben put my username on the Zen testbed and found no issues.

Speeds are down to 500 kps then when I change gateway speeds are 7.2 Mbps when downloading from the fuller test files. What the heck is going on. My exchange is green yet when I run the BT speedtest I get 6.5 mbps then seconds later using the fuller 500 kbps - change gateway to ghandi all ok. What the heck?

Great speeds eh? But five minutes ago I was getting 50 kbps on average, and Andy Murray is still on.

I have also dropped from 7.5meg to 500. How did you change the gateway??

Just disconnect your ppp session in the router (don't reboot the router) then check it with tracert. Have you confirmed it's not your profile by using BT Speedtest?

Tried to change my username to do the second part of test, i click got it reopens page and i get 404 error. Tried it loads of times and given up now but something def really wrong. My draytek is still syncing at 8000k.

I didn't get to the second part of the BT test. Keep trying different gateways until you have tried them all, about 7 I reckon, I used to find Gauthier the best, but now Gandhi is stable for me.

Might be worth giving Zen a call in the morning if it hasn't cleared up. Since my problems a few days ago it hasn't repeated and Zen did follow up yesterday.

I spoke to Zen today about an error with their Customer Portal (incorrect reporting of line data) and also mentioned about since Wimbledon Afternoon speeds were quite variable. Generally by the early evening time all is consistent.

I find my peak to be afternoon on average losing about 1 mbps speed from 6.5 mbps. Mornings and evenings are full speed in general. But this was as if the pipe I was on was full and over subscribed because changing gateway solved the problem. BT speedtest showed full speed.

Just done more tests and getting 3668 kbps but my profile is about 7.1mb so still seems poor.

Zen will say that's acceptable according to BT. Have you checked your exchange for faults and capacity. Zen have a exchange checker and PlusNet have a capacity checker. But if you're still getting full speed on BT speedtest I would have a chat with Zen.

Edit: I'm back on Gauthier so there has been some load balancing during the night.

Just done another test and its down to 300k now, unable to use iplayer or utube. Getting nowhere with Zen. I had issues with plusnet re:missing e-mails and not getting support and then i moved to Zen. Been with zen for about 5 or 6 years so looks like I'll be moving again. This should be a simple and straighforward problem to resolve??

Done all the checks and looks fine, noticed the exchange is enabled for the new 24mb service.

The exchange is about 1/4 mile round the corner.

Took a couple of days for Zen to get back to me using email. Quickest way is to phone. Interestingly I have just jumped gateway from Gauthier to Gandhi the differences is 6.4 mbps to 7.2 mbps on DU Meter. So my conclusion, there's a balancing problem on Gateways. But this doesn't explain your 500 k.

Edit: Thinking further Enternet was having problems with their new WBC service from BT maybe with your exchange being upgraded it has had an effect on your service.

I have just installed DU meter (first time), running iplayer in back ground and went from gay to gandhi. Jumped from 1mb to 1.8 so slight improvemnt.

My SNR is 13 and Atten is 17.

Still full sync and profile? BT speedtest ok? Otherwise that's better but not great.

I could not complete the speed test, got as far as stage two, changed to the test account, click go, 404 error. Tried loads of times.

The Performance Tester is now testing Broadband connection. Your configured download throughput speed for this service is 7150 k

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1367 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.

Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

Seems very much up and down, maybe the exchange is getting "drained".

Btw, thanks for all your help so far smile

Not great as Speedtest.net takes the peak speed and reports it. Best to check with a few tests and the download files at fuller.zen.co.uk/test. The 100 meg file is good to watch on DU Meter to see what's happening in real time. But if it's an exchange problem changing ISP wont fix it. Time to phone Zen in the morning.

Now that your BT speedtest is low looks like some sort of exchange congestion. Zen will confirm or not.

Edit: Have a look in the Enternet forum their maybe clues in there if any speed problems with the new WBC exchanges.
