Many years back we used to put big files on a USB ( Or CD-Rom) and do just that, physically take the data from one building to another. We used to joke that for slightly further a homing pigeon would be the fastest as it misses the traffic jams

I've been told stories like this in the past. The oldest version being that they would start transferring a reel to reel data tape from Cheshire to London over their at-the-time state of the art national X25 network and send off a copy of the reel in a van.
Although the transfer via the network was often a bit faster than the van, if it failed, it would have to be started again. It was cheaper to send the van than lose precious time starting the transfer again!

Honestly it's all first world problems for me. I can just use RDP and keep latency and bandwidth sensitive activity within the workplace network.

Plus I can drive/cycle/walk to said data centre if I need to.

Having less latency would be nice but not needed.

RDP from London to AWS (eu-west-2) here is pretty quick; RTT around 2ms. Session bandwidth fairly low in the single digits Mbps.

Site-to-site VPN running RDP to servers Ipswich to London via mixture of FTTP / EAD either end; RTT is around 8ms and session bandwidth around 22-30 Mbps
