What can I really expect ? ever 1000 ? 900+ 940+ ???

[link to this post]

So very long story, after 150/30 with Zen for six years, I decided it was about time to ReGrade (it was because my Broadband was going to go up to £49.99 a month, because we moved the Copper Telephone service away, and lost the discount, because of bundled service - nopbody ever told us this, and don't have any documentation which tells me this either - I've clamed down since!).

So could have stuck and paid £49.99 a month, so decided to take another 18 month contract and Re-Grade to Full Fibre 900/100, because I really want the upload speed to get backups to Cloud.

Anyway we use UniFi USG Pro 4, we know that IDS/IPS reduces throughput when it's enabled.

So I was a little surprised that after disabling IDS/IPS, the speed is the same!

Approx 300

My Broadband Speed Test

This is not WiFi it's fixed 10GBe from a workstation.

If I've got time, I will connect direct to the ONT over the weekend and test again, direct via a PPPoE connection to check, do I have to wait days for the line to "bed in"

this is not even minimum 450+

and on that note why are all speeds advertised at 900/100, when AAISP advertise theres at 1000, when my assumption they are selling the same service or are thjey not ?

It probably is configuration on the USG4Pro. It's unusual not to be able to get 930Mbps+/105Mbps+ with AAISP. You'll not get over ~940Mbps due to ethernet overheads.

Note that if you're not on one of the new FB9000 LNS at AAISP (happened to me initially due to account not set up right their end) you will see some performance dropoff, but I don't think it is as extreme as you see.

Make sure you have hardware PPPoE offload enabled in the USG, and also disable smart queues and traffic classification for testing.

They are selling the same service.

Openreach call it 1000/115, because you have a gigabit connection to the ONT (exactly 1,000,000,000 bits per second) and you can use it all in the download direction.

However, a speedtest only measures the TCP payload throughput. Each TCP segment is wrapped inside an IP datagram, and each IP datagram is wrapped inside a PPPoE frame inside an ethernet frame.

This means that when the ethernet is full to capacity at 1Gps, the maximum payload throughput that speedtest can see is about 942Mbps (IPv4) or 930Mbps (IPv6).

To save arguments with customers that they're not getting the service they're paying for, service providers just call it 900Mbps.

Thanks for you reply, so if it's the same service Why is AAISP advertising it as 1000/115, and other ISPs 900/100 ?

Thanks for the reply, I'm actually with Zen the AAISP was just a throwaway comment.

The USG Pro 4 is configured as such with IDS/IPS disabled, smart queues have never been enabled

windows or mac/linux ? and have you tested that nic is doing 10gbits via the lan? even though this isn't even a 2gbit service, i just want to rule out funkyness with the nic ..

This is Windows 10 workstation the 10Gbe fibre connection is working correctly on the LAN

the speed test within the USG Pro 4 does not also show anything above 340

So that’s ignoring the workstation config maybe test PPPoE with a laptop later if I have time

AAISP tend to target technical customers whom know the difference. Other ISPs are following the Advertising Standards Authority's guide. The same happened on FTTC/VDSL, where the Openreach 80/20 service was sold as "upto 76" by most ISPs.

I suspected as much thanks

It’s a friend that’s with AAISP which is switching ISPs and trying to find another which advertises the same service!

So sort of starting a new thread.

1. Restarted the USG Pro 4.
2. IDS/IPS is disabled.
3. Tried offload hardware enabled and disabled.
4. Shutdown and powered off cold the USG PRO 4 for 5 minutes,
5. ONT shutdown and powered off cold for 5 minutes.
6. Replaced the ethernet cable from, USG to ONT with Cat 6A shielded cable.

This is the result

My Broadband Speed Test

Next steps mayne update the firmware in the USG to latest and last, all though fearful of this! As firmware updates in Unifi land never go my way and cause lots of issues!
