Zen mailboxes, forwarding, and domain.

Also posted in the Zen support forum, but as it's a weekend, I thought I might get a quicker response here.

I've very pleased to have just migrated in from Plusnet where I had one co.uk domain (just used for webspace) and my .com domain at Amenworld pointing at PN's dns servers, using my domain redirect for email and webspace.

I had seperate mailboxes of the form "mydomain+user", so all 5 mailboxes were addressed via say "[email protected]", "[email protected]", etc.

I can set the additional mailboxes up with Zen (*@mydomain.myzen.co.uk), but everthing with *.mydomain.com goes to me.

What would be the easiest and least expensive way to have it the way I had it with PN ?

It's a web address pack with AW, so it's the domain, catchall forwording (just one addy I think) and 2mb (lol !) hosting webspace which I don't use. I've parked the co.uk with 123.reg for just now.

Sorry this is so long, but I'm not well up on domains etc. Thanks

Hi,

Don't know if the following is of any help, but here goes!

I don't bother with the email offerings of ISPs, etc. as they are a PIA. Instead, I run my own mail server on the end of my ADSL line. I've modified the DNS records for my domains to point to my Zen IP address, and the router then forwards any port 25 (SMTP) traffic to my server. Advantages of this are spam and virus filtering gets done before it reaches the end user, and it downloads in the background so email appears instantly as soon as you log onto the server. You'll have much more control over it this way.

If you have an old PC you don't mind running 24/7, I'd recommend this route.

I currently use FTGate, but I've just checked their website (www.ftgate.com) and they've been a little greedy and increased the basic cost from around

In reply to:

An alternative that may be worth checking is Mercury Mail from Pegasus (www.pmail.com). I haven't downloaded or used it so can't comment on how it works, but it does look promising after a quick read of the spec on the website....

I run Surgemail as my mail server. Although it is an Enterprise level server, there is a free five user version which has all the facilities as its big brother except mail relaying - a positive plus for the amateur!

Hi,

I also run my own mail server on the end of the Zen line.

I use Xmail from www.xmailserver.org. It's free and will run both on Linux and Windows. Easily configured, especially if you use some of the addons PHPXmail is quite good, so is the Windows Client XMail Administrator.

For my DNS services I use www.mydomain.com - free, and great flexibility on how you configure it.

One thing to consider though, if you start running your own mail server, is SPAM and Virus control. Investigate Spamassassin and ClamAv, both of which can be integrated into Xmail (check the Xmail forums for info).

Good luck......
