Moving from Virgin Media to BT

[link to this post]

Howdy,

I currently have two phone lines - one I've had for years with Virgin Media / Telewest / United Artists (whatever they are called this week) and another BT line I had especially installed for ADSL with Zen.

I'm looking to join the exodus from Virgin Media and dump them for all services, but would dearly like to keep the number.

Question is, would it be possible to transfer the Virgin Media number to my BT line replacing it? What would the process be involved?

I don't mind ADSL downtime!!

Cheers,

Mike

Very unlikely, but this is the wrong forum for the question. The number assigned to your line has nothing to do with Zen. It's a BT issue.

Realise the number change is a BT issue...

Was really wondering that if I can get VM to agree to migrate the number to an already active BT line (an BT will replace the number), what kind of work will Zen have to do?

Will it mean ceasing the service the reprovisioning it?

I think at best, in order to port the number to BT from Virgin, you would need to migrate the line from Virgin to BT (number an all). Normally it works the other way around (i.e. someone with a BT line migrating to another provider and porting the BT number across at the same time).

I'm not aware that you can port number only, but I've never had a situation where I've needed to find out. Best bet is to discuss it with Virgin and BT to see what is possible.

(p.s. by migrate I mean change telco, nothing to do with ADSL migrations).

It all depends if the line supplied by Virgin Media was installed using their own cables or if it was originally a BT line.

If it was a BT line, then it should be possible to transfer back without incurring a BT New Line installation charge.

If the line was put in using Virgin Media's own cabling system, then I suspect that a completely new line would have to be installed by BT to provide their service.

We migrated a NTL number to BT a few years ago.

No issues just told BT that we wanted to keep the NTL number.

BT were very happy we were switching back I remember!

But did you simply move the number across to BT, or did you change your phone provider from NTL to BT i.e. did the line also move across from NTL to BT?

Cheers for the replies...

The VM line is a proper one - installed back in the days of United Artists...

The BT line has been installed for a couple of years, all it does is provide ADSL...

Any ideas of the best department in BT to contact or the correct terminology to use? I don't want to get pushed from person to person!

Cheers,

Mike
