sudden speed drop

[link to this post]

hi all,

Ive recently noticied a drop in speed on my line, Ive been in the same house ever since ive had adsl. I used to easily get a good 6-7 meg speed. But now i seem to have dropped to 5-6 meg speeds.

I am not sure what speeds my line stats should give me, But my current router reports

Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 20.0 db 13.0 db
Noise Margin 7.1 db 22.0 db

The question is should i still be getting the high speeds i used to get with these stats ? my exchange is oakham. I cant see any problems at the exchnage on the samknows website.

edit. I posted this here as i am with zen, The scary thing is this afternoon my speed is down to 2.7 meg
thanks in advance from gav

I presume you refer to IP data transfer speed ?

Which speed test(ers) have you been using to get those figures.

Also given your sync is 8128 I also presume ADSL1 still which gives you a max rate of 7.15mb

You need to run the BT speed tester and post the results from that as we have no idea what your BRAS profile is, or if it may be a hot VP.

Your line is short at 20db - I can't tell if your on the default 6db margin, or a 9db - that close to the exchange I would of expected 9 or 12db - either way the line from those initial stats looks fine.

If you can post the make router and the full line stats along with the results from the BT speed tester that will allow people to help you a bit better.

ok heres a bit more info.

This lot of data was the from official bt speedtester just 20 mins ago (10:42)

Download speedachieved during the test was - 4080 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7150 Kbps

Earlier this afternoon this result was at 5000 kbps. Where are a few days ago i was close to the max possible.

I am indeed on adsl1.

My router is a netgear dg834gt.

I hope this new infomation helps a bit and thanks very much for the help youve given smile

Ok - I'd give technical support a call or an email - thats a bit down on what I'd expect - however as it says its within the limites of what BT say is OK for your service.

My router is a netgear dg834gt.

Which version hardware - there where 3 different chipsets if I recall depending which one you actually had could have an impact on sync depending on the exchange hardware.

Hi. I'm in oakham too. I've noticed a slight reduction in throughput lately. This could most likely be the reason tho.

That may well be your answer - Exchange congestion.

morning all smile thanks for the inresting responces, I never gave the thought that our exchange was congested which i guess could explain the slower speeds. It still seems odd though.

Anyhow ive tried finding my router version today looked all over the router front back and sides you name smile Couldnt find anything though
my router calls itself a DG834GT
108 Mbps Super Wireless ADSL Router.

Its the one with silver side plates too if that helps. My speed this morning who ever is a fraction under 6 meg.
