Mr SpeX thanks for your continuing interest (at 2am+!) - well I did that bt speedtesty whatnot and for the first time since I tried doing it, it actually managed an upload test as well. During the test it said at the top of the screen "No of threads are 16!" I would like to think that is a good thing but I have a sneaky suspicion it isn't.

Anyway here is the result of the speedtest jury:

Downstream 1.7
Upstream 0.4

AND the ZDNet Sppedtest came in at 1.4 and then 1.2

AND the FiveFwd Speedtest came in a few minutes later at 1.66 down 0.34 up.

High probability of a star wired internal wiring setup. Where does the telephone line come into the house and how are the extensions then connected up?

Removing the ring wire at all extensions is often very beneficial if this is the case.

That's only evidence of low Sync speed, which could be as a result of contention or throttling. The NM is at the standard 6 dB. It would be much higher if there is noise,

Wrong, contention and throttling do not affect sync speed.

ADSL Max syncs as fast as it can, the max sync for the attenuation is far higher than what it's currently syncing at. The target noise margin should be a round number, the wiring is suspect. the performance of the connection is poor. This all points to a noise problem.

My approach would be to diagnose the reason for the noise problem and cure it.

So you are saying that because the Sync Speed is significantly slower than expected for that attenuation, then there must be a noise problem?

In that case I would have expected the NM to be significantly higher than 6 dB.
