Well that's the point, there's so much noise it's reducing the margin.
If there was less noise, there would be more margin, so the sync could be higher.

I think I may have stumbled across the problem...possibly.

Tonight I connected my laptop (Vista Home Premium) and decided to run a five.fwd.tv speedtest.
(It is my XP desk top that is the computer I have been having the problem with)

The laptop test came in at 3.2 down and 0.3 up and the little graph showed a pretty constant speed.

I immediately did the same on the XP desktop using the five.fwd.tv speedtester and got 0.7 down with a graph that shot up and down erratically.

Big difference between desktop and laptop? Desktop connected with ethernet cable. Laptop wireless.......so..... I changed the connection of the ethernet cable from plug 4 to plug 1 on the router for the desktop pc and redid the test a few times. It came in consistently at around 3.2 with a pretty steady graph - just a little bit of fluctuation.

While I am happy that this seems to have sorted it out, the trouble is I don't understand why.

I shall try again tomorrow and see what happens.

The issue is that for your attenuation you should be seeing 7Mb. If you're happy with half of that, then that's ok. If you want to improve you'll have to sort out the noise problem. There's more to life than speedtests for some.

I would conclude that Port 1 of Router is faulty or at least the connection wasn't well made. You could retry it with the plug pushed firmly in and see if it makes any diff.

Actually I think it was port 4 that must have been faulty. I seem to get consistent speeds of around 3.2 to 3.3 on the others which is consistent with the btspeedtest thing.

I can live with that.
