Anyone seeing any problems this evening?

Is anyone seeing any problems this evening regarding packet loss / slow(ish) speeds (specifically on the 21CN platform)? Just got back from a night out only to find multiple emails from a remote monitoring platform saying my connection was down (appeared to start around 8:45pm). I've checked the router logs and the connection never dropped. I have run some ping tests from my router to BBC, Zen and Google. All of which showed packet loss:

A download from http://fuller.zen.co.uk/test is currently running at 220kB/s (around 2Mbps). I know it's not mega slow, but my sync speed is currently 10Mbps.

I look after another Zen line in Hook, Hampshire which is on the 20CN platform. I ran the same ping tests as above on that line and they came back 100%.

Here is my connection on the BQM: http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/314496560fb... Not seeing anything on Zen's support pages to indicate a problem and too early for PEW. I'm on the Crawley, West Sussex exchange.

I'm not too worried tonight as I'm off to bed shortly, but will be more concerned if it's still like it in the morning.

Hmm, looks like this problem is back again. It's not causing me any (noticeable) problems browsing (at the moment), but the packet loss is causing the remote monitoring platform to think my connection is bouncing. frown

A ping test from to Zen (212.23.3.100) from my router:

Checking the BQM on here shows persistent packet loss starting around 7pm (similar to last night). I have checked previous days and they are clean. I have also run a download from http://fuller.zen.co.uk/test again (did it in a different browser - IE9) and the download speed was around 80kB/s - Screenshot. I have checked my exchange status on the Plusnet user pages and it's showing as Green (which isn't to say there isn't a problem).

If like yesterday, I suspect the issue will be gone in the morning.

For good measure, here is a quick ping test to my router from my work PC (via a 4Mbps BTNet circuit):

I can confirm the issue is NOT being caused by over utilisation here - nobody except me is online and all I'm doing it posting this and reading email. No windows updates or other updates running.

Thoughts anyone?

can you do a traceroute to;

bbc.co.uk (212.58.224.138)

yahoo.com (209.191.122.70)

If your on *nix (IOS/Linux/etc) please trace over icmp. I don't know if windows understands that.

And post the results. - Can you also let us know your current router stats and BRAS profile.

Hi IamQ

It appears to be back to normal again - the BQM is not showing any packet loss and pings to BBC are flying through with no loss (10,000 pings and not one single ping dropped). Speeds have returned as well (now getting 1.1MB/s as opposed to 80kB/s earlier) from fuller.zen.co.uk.

I'm beginning to wonder if it's congestion at the exchange.

If I see the same sort of issues tomorrow I'll run those traceroutes
