Normal behaviour for FTTP?

[link to this post]

So I was lucky enough to get my FTTP installed last week (Full Fibre 300). Download speed is great and so is the upload. My only question is around the speedtest. When downloading I get an "A" and the ping remains between 15-18ms. On the upload it is "F" and the ping jumps up to 250ms or so. Running the Fritz box 7530 in router only mode.

Is this normal?

Cheers!

That does not sound right to me. Are you using a wired connection when doing the speed test?

Yep all hard wired.

Cant say I have seen that on my Zen FTTP, also just gone live last week!

Which speed test site are you using? Looking at your ping guessing you are not based down in the south.

I wonder if the Fritz is trying to invoke some kind of QoS?

Using Thinkbroadband speedtest, its when you click on the analyis button on the speed test result.

I am based in the South West, I did think about QoS so lowered the upload and download speeds on the 7530 but it seems to be hit and miss on the values.

This is quite normal, it's called buffer bloat. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bufferbloat

You need a router with some QoS settings. For example I use pfSense and with QoS disabled I get similar ratings on Thinkbroadband, enable QoS and it is A/A. Many newer routers come with a default setting to avoid buffer bloat.

I would Google "Fritz box 7530 bufferbloat" to see if you can find some setting tips.
