Re: Slow speed after GEA migration

[re: Geordish] [link to this post]

Yes, perhaps, but I have now been very nearly 2 weeks with messed up internet due to this migration..... On the plus side, Zen network engineer visiting me on Monday, so maybe there is hope..... I tried the original Fritz router again last night, and it's the same, so for now am back with the Apple one which gives way better results (albeit 1/2 speed). Not exactly all sunshine and roses though....

Yes it's Monday for me too.

Here's my graph https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband/monitoring/...

If Zen place an order today to migrate a line back to the BT wholesale network it will take 10 working days to complete. I’m not sure that it can be expedited.

Hi FakeJake, do I assume you are still using the Fritz router? If so, what happens if you run their diagnostics Speedtest, do you get full speed then? I do, which is why I raised the possible router issue..... The rest seems like ancient history !
Actually, the difference between both of our broadband traces is really interesting... You get loads of packet loss consistently, and I don't (using my router) but did when I used Fritz.... This is becoming curiouser and curiouser... The drop at about 4pm yesterday on my graph is where I retried the Fritz router for a few minutes....

I believe the "packet loss" is just the fritzbox not responding to every ping. Apparently a known quirk. I've got no problems with packet loss as far as I'm aware.

Not sure how I can run a speed test from the router itself... Where do I find that?

Login to Fritz!Box..... Diagnostics...... Function...... Run that, and one of the options (a link) is the option to run a Speedtest (its the only link) - sadly it's in German, but I get full upload / download speed doing that - Of course, that is a WAN measurement, that isn't reflected LAN side, but it does 'prove' that the PPPOE connection can work at full speed..... Then you will be down the crazy Rabbit Hole that I am in.....

It's something like this http://avm.de/service/zack-der-speedtest-fuer-ihre-b...

PM me if you need help

Ok, when i ran this test, it's just a browser based speed test page, which runs the test from the browser you're using, not the router itself.

Update: Zen network guy visited with some serious test kit and ran some tests for about an hour connected directly to the ONT (new one changed by Openreach) to eliminate all parts of my network, including their router.
Confirmed the problem that I've been seeing is definitely present.
He said that interestingly that the problem seems to be present on TCP but not UDP (or maybe not as bad on UDP).
Should hear more once they've analysed their packet captures that they've taken from here, the exchange and other points further along the network.

Hi,

Zen guy just left here, similar observations, but equally no obvious conclusions as yet. Also seeing some odd packet behaviour, but they weren't immediately sure where (on the route) was causing it. I thought Dario said my issue was UPD ok, but TCP issue - which makes more sense? Perhaps I misheard.

I am wondering if something odd is happening to NAT packets? But I have no proof, just a hunch? It's still interesting as NAT isn't just one way of wrapping stuff up (see WIKI) which may explain why I see different behaviour between different routers? More research needed!
