Re: Slow speed after GEA migration

I'm not sure of the point you are making. Of course routing can affect speed if you are routed to somewhere that has some contention or other interconnection issue with the rest of the world.

Imagine in the example I gave that the GEA circuits terminate somewhere in Zen's network that has a rubbish route to their own speed test, but is relatively uncontended to the one speed checker that I found that seems to work at almost full speed. In that case as a result of routing, the speed is impacted.

The Zen speedtest.net server is recognised by Zen support to be a decent test to do, so if your speeds aren't up to par when using it for tests, they'll recognise that as an issue worth investigating.

Mine have been spot on to basically any server on speedtest.net since the fix in my exchange.

That's good to hear.
Going through the speed test server list, I note that speed tests to Swish Fibre are also testing around the 800mbps range, much better than Zen's own server. Still not really where they used to be though.
As I say, pre-migration I would always get well over 900mbps on the Zen or other servers - unless someone was using the connection for something (as expected)

I think if we are thinking that we are running through overloaded routers in the middle of a Sunday, or insufficient bandwidth within the UK, the straws are being clutched at! But I guess IF that's the case, then you have a point, however, for ME when it was bad, the difference was simply (IN)credible (500Mbis down to perhaps 20). I have seen many opinions re routing, but to add to this, I use VPN's to exit all over the place, and route to various other locations and it just doesn't make a huge difference to the bandwidth for me (for example routing via PIA in Southampton gives me 498Mbps or thereabouts to the Zen speediest server), my point being that if things are working(!) routing shouldn't matter (to speed), BUT if there is a fault, or massive contention, then obviously it will affect things.

Whether it is a possibility seems to me to be predicated on where the PPPoE like terminates in a GEA migrated setup. If the PPPoE endpoint is beyond the far end of the GEA in question, it seems most likely to be an issue at the far end, as otherwise why would I be able to speedtest faster to Swish Fibre than to Zen or most other ISPs? There seems to be something a bit better about the connection to Swish Fibre than Zen, and the data in the PPPoE session should be oblivious to it. However, if the PPPoE session terminates much more locally to me, then I guess anything goes.
Do you know where the PPPoE session ends with a GEA migrated setup?

Nope, simply that we fought for 2 - 3 months with a rubbish connection - disconnects etc, and it was plain as day that all Zen had to do was 'Back Migrate' - which after seven weeks, I managed to persuade them to do. End result Karma, and everything back to 'normal' - in my case 500Mb down / 70Mb up. FakeJake persevered with their GEA migrated line for another month, they gave him an extra BTW line, and on THAT connection all was good, and surprisingly a few days later, after that was installed (for no explicable reason), the GEA migrated line suddenly worked again - see the posts, but it remains unclear just why it suddenly fixed itself (to me). In the meantime, they continue to migrate people to GEA, and...... problems still keep happening.... You tell me? I was with BT Business before, and never had the problem, and before that was with Zen FTTC in Norfolk, that's really all I can say, except that I was really teetering on the edge of going elsewhere from Zen a few weeks ago, but for now.... It's fine. I really urge everyone to look at what is going on behind the scenes.

Not in Openreach is as precise as I can be. They deliver traffic onto the CPs network tagged with subscriber information, and the CP takes it from there.

Once Zen internally believe they have identified the cause of your previous failed GEA migration is there any possibility that they could migrate you again without telling you (as they did before)?

Nightmare on My Street!....

Actually, Zen said that they had marked my account NOT to be migrated for the next two years, but by which calendar? smile

In seriousness, I really hope that they contact (us all) to say what caused this, and what they will do/have done about it. It'd be really nice to make a free decision then based upon that information. The trouble is, I really don't think we're at that point (so the evidence seems to suggest).
