FTTP Regraded - Poor upload speeds

[link to this post]

Our FTTP connection was regraded this morning from the 300 to the 500 service. Zen said the 300 service had been discontinued but couldn’t say why.

It doesn’t matter if the router (FRITZ!Box 7530 AX) downstream/upstream is set to 1000/1000 or 500/70, running a speed test results in about 500Mbit down but about 35Mbit on the up.

The regrade confirmation email doesn’t look right either:

Estimated Lower Download Speed (Kbps): 250000
Estimated Upper Download Speed (Kbps): 500000
Estimated Upper Upstream Speed (Kbps): 47000
Estimated Lower Upstream Speed (Kbps): 35000
Min Guaranteed Download (Kbps): 250000
Min Upload (Kbps): 35000
Max Download (Kbps): 500000
Max Upload (Kbps): 47000
Advertised Download (Kbps): 500000
Advertised Upload (Kbps): 70000

So far Zen has tried recreating the profile and the router has been reset to factory settings and the reset button on the ONT has been held in for several seconds. But still the speed tests show the same upload speed and the packet loss is between 2 and 4%.

Apart from everything that’s been done so far, is there anything else I can try?

I've had exactly the same regrade this morning but my speeds are fine. My email is as follows:-

Estimated Lower Download Speed (Kbps): 500000
Estimated Upper Download Speed (Kbps): 500000
Estimated Upper Upstream Speed (Kbps): 70000
Estimated Lower Upstream Speed (Kbps): 70000
Min Guaranteed Download (Kbps): 250000
Min Upload (Kbps): 35000
Max Download (Kbps): 500000
Max Upload (Kbps): 70000
Advertised Download (Kbps): 500000
Advertised Upload (Kbps): 70000

So quite different to yours. I've connected via BTW in case that is the difference.

Thanks for your reply.

I’m also connecting via BT Wholesale. Waiting for a call from a fault manager now.

Zen are pre-emptively aligning your product speeds ahead of Openreach dropping your 300Mbps speed tier on 1st April 2025 as reported by ISPreview in this article - Openreach to Withdraw Some Legacy UK FTTP and FTTC Broadband Speed Tiers

Openreach are only dropping 330/30, not 330/50.

It's just a marketing ploy by Zen: 550 costs only a few pence more than 330 at wholesale, but it sounds more enticing to customers, so they've decided to drop the 330 tier entirely - and make people pay a bit more.

I hope Aquiss don't do the same: 330 suits me just fine, and it would cost me £5 per month more to go up to 550.

No plans at all. It's a super popular package for us.

I rather hope that Aquiss follows Zen and IdNet by offering the 500 service to 330 service customers with no price increase.

Next time we have a meeting with BT Wholesale, I'll draft you in and maybe you can ask why their pricing does not align with Openreach wink
