As at 16th October I was sync'ed at 3,456 with a measured speed of approx 2.8Mbps
Went away for a few days on 21st Oct so shutdown the router, came back and rebooted this morning at approx 8:30am got a sync of 3520 but noticed the speed seemed a little sluggish....................just did a check as usual here at TB and it is 1.6Mbps
Now for the record the Att'n is 55db, with an SNR of 6.0db the only thing that has varied over a goodly while is the SNR that can be 6.5 sometimes.
So what gives with a mismatch like this??? Or is my grey matter missing somethimg again

Wouldn't do any harm to see what data the BT Performance Tester produces for the connection.

And whether the "Current line speed" in the member centre agrees with the IP Profile quoted.
I wonder if the connection was moved to WBC in the off period, and the IP Profile set to 2000kbps??

Thanks guys
Right BT speedtester says IP is 3000, as for the outage mentioned my phone number was not one of the affected ones and anyway as mentioned the router was restarted this morning the 24th having been turned off on the 21st.
You mentioned an IP mismatch and I am sure I had this happen before where the BT IP was different to the PlusNet one but it was a long while ago so does anyone know the PlusNet page to check the their recorded IP and FWIW why on earth would turning off the router result in such a mismatch.................................Orbrey where are you ???
Edit ~ found the portal page and it says 3MB
Now what gives - I just did another TB speed test and get the expected 2.7Mbps much more in keeping withn the IP and sync

It is possible that as I wondered earlier that your line was moved to ADSL2+ while you were away. Do you know if your exchange was upgraded for WBC during the last few months?
If this did happen, it is possible the IP Profile was set to a default 2000kbps profile. The BT one could have updated rapidly, but the auto-update of the Plusnet copy just hadn't happened at the time you first tested the speed.
That could be a garbage explanation, but could account for what you observed.

Well according to SamKnows there is no date or info for 21CN WBC at my exchnage? If ADSL2+ was enabled surely the sort of speed I should see on my 55db line is of the order of say 5Mbps i.e. approx a doubling of what MaxDSL has yielded???
|
|
|
If samknows is right then the first part of my explanation dies. However if there was some other cause for the default 2000kbps profile being applied the rest has a tiny chance of being relevant.
You could also check what the BT Wholesale checker says about ADSL2+.
As for speed increases due to moving from ADSL to ADSL2+, not lilely unless the ADSL sync is well over 5Mbps. As a rough guide, see this graph.

Well very odd still, booted up the PC & browser and thought things were a tad sluggish!
All the 'figures' are the same i.e. sync 3520 and both BT Performance Test & PlusNet IP say 3000 & 3MB respectively but did an initial TB speedtest and got 1.7 here
and few mins later got 2.7 as here (after checking the Router GUI and the BT and PlusNet info was the same) NB as the BT test was done after the initial TB one it reports measured speed at 2654 which tallies with the TB of 2.7
So again the question what gives ??? Why the strange initial speed and then the "normal" higher one........two days in a row!

Connected wired or wireless to the router?
How secure is the wireless on the router?
Are you running any scheduled jobs?

Speed test based on wired PC
Yes, wireless secure as I can make it i.e. MAC address filtering (and AFAIK I have locked out unauthorised connections) & WPA passphrase consisting of letters (both uppper & lower case) and numbers none of which are meaningful words.
No scheduled jobs
Do please explain why you asked and why that could give the oddity of the measured speeds???
Edit ~ just looked and 1hr 26 imns ago there router was rest by the exchange and now sync'ed at 3104 margin 6.5db!!!! TB test here

Do please explain why you asked and why that could give the oddity of the measured speeds??? Just normal "noise" can make a huge difference to wireless links, also interference from other routers in your area using overlapping channels. InSSIDer is a superb tool for checking and fixing overlaps.
Securing the wireless obviously necessary, but yours looks fine. If it had been open or WEP it could have been someone watching a regular TV program online.
Any scheduled jobs by yourself, particularly local or remote backups, could clobber the throughput on the router.
Another thought, are there any other users on your own system? If so, what are they doing when you are doing speed tests?

Not thought of overlapping channels as at the time of the slowdown no one was using the wireless access of the router. Likewise at time of speed test no other users accessing.
Just remembered there is a scheduled 'job' ~ my AV program does regular updates. It was set for every 60mins (default setting) I have now chnaged that to single daily update. Though in regard as to whether that is/was the hog taking the speed at the time of tests I am fairly sure it had completed its task???

re inSSIDer
Having looked at the fora it seems to use inSSIDer it should be installed on a laptop or desktop connecting by wireless to the router. Is this correct?
My laptop is a company one and it would not be etiquette to use such software on it
Hmmmm! unless there was a non-installer version???

InSSIDer needs to be installed on a PC having a wireless adapter, but it does not need to be connecting to anything. It just needs the adapter to sense out neighbouring wireless networks.
I see no harm in installing it on a works PC, but if you feel you can't do that you could buy a USB wireless adapter like the Netgear WG111 for the desktop.

Hmmmm! unless there was a non-installer version??? If you aren't connecting anything wirelessly to the router InSSIDer is not needed.
If you are connecting anything to the router wirelessly then it is a useful tool to improve the performance of your wireless network. It lets you see what other wireless networks are around you and avoid clashes with them. Those clashes are the local wireless equivalent of crosstalk /congestion on the main internet connection between the router and the ISP.
If you click the Download button on the link, it offers the usual Run or Save options. Is that what you meant by a non-installer version?
You can install InSSIDer on any computer on your network that has wireless capability, even if that computer is wired to the router. It just detects the wireless routers operating within range. It doesn't need to be on the work laptop to do that, but gives you the information you need to select the optimum channel on your router. Your laptop will automatically detect your router's channel - that is what it does now.
The only snag is that the relative strengths of the signals from other sources can be wildly different in different rooms of the house, and it is the strength where the laptop is working wirelessly that matters, if that is a different room to where InSSIDer is running.
I don't see that "etiquette" is an issue with this. It doesn't look at traffic, just signal strength from wireless routers and Wireless Access Points. It doesn't detect other wireless computers/laptops. Would your company IT department really object to you installing it on your laptop? Maybe they should be using themselves! How big is the company/office?

Hmm, company etiquette.
For the company I work for it is a disciplinary offence to install software on a work device. This is primarily because people install all sorts of rubbish, both licensed and unlicensed, and this can cause numerous support issues (especially with some network software where potentially it could cause issues with network drivers). This can be a huge cost to a large organisation.
And the OP may not even be able to install on a work machine as any sensible company would run users without admin access - and without admin access most software will fail to install.

Hi Routefinder,
Sorry I'm so late coming in to this thread. Just checked profiles on ours and BTs side and they're matching at 2500 at the moment, there's no instances of it being below that though it has been up to 3000. Likewise on the connection logs there's no disconnections.
I can confirm though that there's been no regrading to ADSL2 - it's still a 20CN line.
I suspect the best thing to do would be to keep an eye on it and make sure that none of the things mentioned above are causing any slowdowns, I suspect it'll settle soon if it hasn't already.

I agree. However, in the context of suggesting maybe the company should investigate the product for its own setup, (hence also the question about the company size), it was my oblique way of suggesting he requests permission.
Note I also pointed out it doesn't need to be installed on the laptop, though that would be best for the reason given.

Bob,
Can inSSIDer be run from a usb pen drive (never used it myself) perhaps that would count as not actually installing it on a works machine?

The only snag is that the relative strengths of the signals from other sources can be wildly different in different rooms of the house, and it is the strength where the laptop is working wirelessly that matters, if that is a different room to where InSSIDer is running. Good point that I overlooked.

Don't see why not, but it will still install stuff on the PC, like in the Registry. Just need to direct the install to the USB drive.

If you have a pen drive then try it. It just runs in memory, no disc accessing or anything.
